Atal Tunnel
World's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft, a modern engineering marvel
Trip Overview
What’s included in your Trip Culture experience
One of the world's longest highway tunnels above 10,000 ft, connecting Manali to Lahaul Valley.
Atal Tunnel, also known as Rohtang Tunnel, is a horseshoe-shaped highway tunnel built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas. At a length of 9.02 km, it is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet (3,000 m). The tunnel reduces the travel distance between Manali and Keylong by 46 km and the travel time by about 4-5 hours. More importantly, it provides all-weather connectivity to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley, which was previously cut off for about 6 months each year due to heavy snowfall on Rohtang Pass.
